I had a rare night away recently. Hubby and I got a night at a B&B while the grandparents enjoyed time with the kids. When I realized that I forgot my shampoo, I was reminded of a blog post I read from an advocate for toxic-free products. She said that she would rather go 4 months without washing her hair than use hotel shampoo.
Yes, the shampoo provided at the B&B contained ingredients I wouldn’t normally use. Yes, the tiny packaging are more wasteful. But I was there, I’d forgotten my usual products, and I wasn’t going to let that stress me out. If you let what you learn about the world stress you out, it’s harder to enjoy the journey. I’m continuing to learn, and continuing to focus on making a difference where I can.
I understand that the amount of harmful ingredients in any one products is really tiny. But I also understand that we’re learning more about the potential impacts of low concentrations on our hormone systems, for example. So I do what I can to choose healthier products for me and my family, when possible.
Will every day be perfect? Absolutely not. Do I still fall victim to greenwashing? Sometimes! But as I learn new information about what’s in everyday products, I constantly and slowly make changes to my routine. Most days I will make good decisions for my health and the planet. Those are what I choose to focus on.
My goal for this blog, the resources I share, and all my services is to provide you with useful and practical information. I want you to feel inspired, not fearful, to make changes in your life. And I hope you can feel proud of the steps you’re already taking.
